Are you certain it is over-fuelling, not just excessive fuel consumption? As you suggest, if it's burning more fuel then you'd expect black smoke. However, if the extra fuel is not being burnt then you'd get white smoke instead - any sign of this?

Excessive fuel consumption could be due to a wide range of reasons, e.g. brakes binding, faulty aux heater, etc. Are there any other unusual symptoms with the car?

How long have you had it? Has the performance changed? Does it start and appear to run OK?

As insider says - it could be binding brakes - Try parking on a levle surface then pull away up to about 20 mph put itno neutral - does it come to a halt qucikly does it roll on ok .

Check tyre pressures.

15mpg? Must be a fuel leak - or someone is siphoning it off. One thing for certain, engine is not using it up, you would have tons of black smoke.

If you can smell diesel inside your car or when parked up pretty much leak. Did you have the fuel filter change recently? it might not be on correctly! it may also be the fuel pump. Have you checked your exhaust for any leaks?

Ecxessive fuel consumption can be misleading. I always run my vehicles full to empty but a good guide is to fill up at the same pump on a regular basis and do a test 100 miles or so down a motorway at a steady 60 when you should need less than 10 litres to top up.

15mpg sound horrendous. If you are losing it it sould be very evident. If you are wasting it and not getting black smoke, something must be getting pretty hot or you're spending a lot of time in thick traffic. Even with a combination of the usual fuel wasting problems I can't imagine 15mpg.
